Children and adolescents living in the street, slums and homeless, become particularly vulnerable to substance use in such high risk circumstances. Also, the rate of help seeking behavior is low due to many factors like lack of family and community support compared to others. It is always better to intervene before they initiate the substance use behavior. Ensuring active participation of young people, they may be empowered to prevent and disseminate information on substance use prevention. Also for this, there should be a strategy where young people learn from each other and support themselves. For this purpose, under the scheme of Targeted Intervention, MSJE, Govt of India has introduced Community Based Peer Led intervention which would be appropriate for preventing and reducing the substance use among the young people.
सड़कों, झुग्गियों और बेघरों में रहने वाले बच्चे और किशोर, ऐसी उच्च जोखिम वाली परिस्थितियों में मादक द्रव्यों के उपयोग के प्रति विशेष रूप से संवेदनशील हो जाते हैं। इसके अलावा, दूसरों की तुलना में परिवार और सामुदायिक समर्थन की कमी जैसे कई कारकों के कारण मदद मांगने के व्यवहार की दर कम है। मादक द्रव्यों के सेवन का व्यवहार शुरू करने से पहले हस्तक्षेप करना हमेशा बेहतर होता है। युवा लोगों की सक्रिय भागीदारी सुनिश्चित करते हुए, उन्हें मादक द्रव्यों के सेवन को रोकने और रोकथाम के बारे में जानकारी प्रसारित करने के लिए सशक्त बनाया जा सकता है। साथ ही इसके लिए ऐसी रणनीति होनी चाहिए जहां युवा एक-दूसरे से सीखें और अपना समर्थन करें। इस उद्देश्य के लिए, लक्षित हस्तक्षेप, एमएसजेई की योजना के तहत, भारत सरकार ने समुदाय आधारित सहकर्मी नेतृत्व हस्तक्षेप की शुरुआत की है जो युवा लोगों के बीच मादक द्रव्यों के उपयोग को रोकने और कम करने के लिए उपयुक्त होगा।

To assess substance use among adolescents in impoverished & marginalized communities
Conduct primary prevention activities through awareness programs
Engage in risk mitigation of substance use among children/ adolescent/youth by:
• • Preventing substance use
• • Delaying initiation of substance us
Identify and train selected peer educators in the community
Implement early prevention education led by trained peer educators
To provide awareness about referral and linkage to counseling, treatment and rehabilitation services for substance dependent adolescents identified in the community
Identifying adolescents subjected to substance use and facilitating their referral/ admission into Rehabilitation Centers/ Drop In Centres.

समुदाय में पहचाने गए मादक द्रव्यों पर निर्भर किशोरों के लिए परामर्श, उपचार और पुनर्वास सेवाओं के लिए रेफरल और जुड़ाव के बारे में जागरूकता प्रदान करना मादक द्रव्यों के सेवन के शिकार किशोरों की पहचान करना और पुनर्वास केंद्रों/ड्रॉप इन केंद्रों में उनके रेफरल/प्रवेश की सुविधा प्रदान करना।
Peer educators will focus on creating awareness among the vulnerable population – particularly children in community on prevention of substance use.
The project staffs will deliver specific intervention on substance use and ensure linkage for treatment and rehabilitation.
Peer Educators will provide educational sessions on life skills among children; side-effects of substance use, risk assessment on substance use among adolescents
